The Center for Creative Leadership sponsors awards to stimulate outstanding field research and its creative application to the practice of leadership.

2011 H. Smith Richardson, Jr. Visiting Fellow at the Center for Creative Leadership

Dr. Jessica PayneThe Center for Creative Leadership welcomes Dr. Jessica Payne who has been selected this year's H. Smith Richardson, Jr. Visiting Fellow. Dr. Payne holds appointments at Harvard Medical School and the University of Notre Dame, where she is currently Assistant Professor and Nancy O'Neill Collegiate Chair in Psychology, and Director of the Sleep Stress and Memory (SAM) Lab. Payne's research focuses on how sleep and stress independently and interactively influence human memory, emotion, performance and creativity. She teaches various courses in Psychology and Neurobiology, including a popular course entitled "The Sleeping Brain" for which she won Harvard University's Bok Center Award for teaching excellence. Payne has recently become interested in applying her research findings to business organizations, striving to help leaders understand how to work with, rather than against, the natural abilities of the human brain. Dr. Payne holds a Ph.D. in Psychology/Cognitive Neuroscience from the University of Arizona, a Master's Degree in Experimental Psychology from Mount Holyoke College, and a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from the University of San Diego. In her spare time, Payne is an enthusiastic wanderlust, and enjoys hiking, cooking, wine, literature and philosophy, and spending time with her life partner and "two too many" cats (she has four).

The Kenneth E. Clark Student Research Award

The International Leadership Association (ILA) and the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL) are sponsoring the annual Kenneth E. Clark Student Research Award to recognize outstanding unpublished papers by undergraduate and graduate students.

Brian C. GuniaBrian C. Gunia has been chosen the 2011 Kenneth E. Clark Student Award winner.

Brian is a doctoral candidate in the Management and Organizations Department at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University. Brian's current research focuses on issues related to ethics, trust, and negotiation; his dissertation examines blame-taking in organizations. He will join the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School in August 2011. Brian is an Assistant Professor in the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School. Brian's current research focuses on issues related to ethics, trust, and negotiation. In particular, he is investigating how organizational actors act and react after an organizational failure. The Kenneth E. Clark Student Research Award recognizes outstanding unpublished papers by undergraduate and graduate students. The award is named in memory of Kenneth Clark, a distinguished scholar and former president of CCL. Beginning in 2010, the award will be co-sponsored with the International Leadership Association (ILA). The winner will receive a cash award and a trip to the ILA Annual Conference to present the paper in a colloquium. This year's conference is in Boston, MA.

2010 Award Winner

Barbara Künzle Barbara Künzle is a Work and Organizational Psychologist and holds a Ph.D. in Psychology. She wrote her Ph.D. thesis on leadership and teamwork in healthcare teams at the Department of Management, Technology, and Economics, at the Swiss Federal Insitute of Technology, Zurich, Switzerland. She published serveral articles and book chapters on leadership and coordination modes. She's currently working as a senior consultant for Avenir Consulting AG, Zurich. Her main consulting activities are competency models, talent management and assessment centers.


2009 Award Winner

Prof. Dr. Deanne N. Den HartogProf. Dr. Deanne N. Den Hartog is full-professor and Head of the Human Resource Management and Organizational Behavior at the University of Amsterdam Business School, the Netherlands. Her research interests include leadership, proactive work behavior, teams, and HRM. She has published on these topics in high quality scientific journals. She is associate editor of Applied Psychology: an International Review and on the editorial board of several journals including the European Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology and the Leadership Quarterly. Deanne received a fellowship from the Leadership Trust Foundation in the UK, is an elected member of the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities and serves on the Board of Directors of the International Association of Applied Psychology (IAAP).


The EJWOP Best Paper Award is jointly sponsored by CCL and the European Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology recognizes high-quality scholarly work on leadership and organizational effectiveness. Annual EJWOP awards are announced every two years, coinciding with the European Association of Work and Organizational Psychology International Conference in May. The two authors received a cash award and presented their papers at the 2011 conference.

The Walter F. Ulmer Jr. Applied Research Award

David V. DayDavid V. Day, has been chosen as the 2010 Walter F. Ulmer, Jr. Award Recipient for his outstanding achievements and contributions to the field of leadership. Read his bio.

The Walter F. Ulmer, Jr. Applied Research Award is named in honor of Walter F. Ulmer, Jr., retired president, for his contributions to CCL and the leadership field, to demonstrate CCL's commitment to applied research, and to build connections with other professionals whose work and commitments are congruent with CCL's. An internal committee (Dave Altman and John Ryan) determines the winner. He or she receives $1,500 and a trip to the Center to attend the Research Awards Event.

Leadership Quarterly Award

John Antonakis

The Leadership Quarterly Best Paper Award, sponsored by the Center for Creative Leadership, is presented annually in recognition of the best published paper submitted during the previous year to The Leadership Quarterly. The 2010 award winning paper is "On making causal claims: A review and recommendations" by John Antonakis, Samuel Bendahan, Philippe Jacquart and Rafael Lalive (21.6, 1086-1120).

John Antonakis, the lead author, is of Swiss and Hellenic nationality. He is Professor of Organizational Behaviour in the Faculty of Business and Economics of the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, where he has previously served as Associate Dean of Faculty and Research. He received his Ph.D. from Walden University in Applied Management and Decision Sciences (specializing in psychometrics of leadership). He was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Psychology at Yale University (focusing on leader expertise). Professor Antonakis' research is currently focused on leadership development, power, personality, and psychometric assessment.

He frequently consults and provides training to organizations on leadership and human resources issues. His clients have included organizations in various sectors including banks (e.g., Cantonal Bank of Geneva, Credit Suisse; GE Money Bank), government organizations (e.g., European Commission; Federal Department of Finance of the Swiss Confederation; Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of the Swiss Confederation), international organizations (e.g., International Committee of the Red Cross, United Nations), private firms (e.g., Eli Lilly, Firmenich, Friends Provident, Gunnebo; Kempinski Hotels, Swisscom) and athletics organizations (e.g., European Athletics Association, International Table Tennis Federation).

He has published in prestigious academic journals such as Science, The Leadership Quarterly, Journal of Operations Management, Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology, Human Relations, Personality and Individual Differences, among others. He has also published two books: The Nature of Leadership, and Being There Even When You Are Not: Leading Through Strategy, Structures, and Systems. Professor Antonakis is associate editor of The Leadership Quarterly and is on the editorial boards of several academic journals including The Academy of Management Review, Human Relations, and Journal of Management Studies. His research is regularly quoted in the international media (press, radio, and TV).
