CCL's Marian Ruderman Speaks About Leadership Influence

Marian RudermanDecember 2011 - Greensboro, NC - Center for Creative Leadership (CCL©) Senior Fellow and Research Director Marian Ruderman was the featured speaker at the "Executive Summit" of the Massachusetts Conference for Women on December 8, 2011.

The conference, regarded as the nation's largest of its kind, drew more than 7,000 professional women. Speakers ranged from best-selling author Martha Beck to controversial Olympic athlete Marion Jones to former congressman and host of MSNBC's "Morning Joe," Joe Scarborough. Ruderman's invitation-only session was exclusively for senior executives and focused on the topic of influence and leadership voice.

"The ability to influence remains a core leadership competency, and leaders at the executive level must understand that there is a major paradigm shift under way," said Ruderman. "Moreover, regardless of the organizational setting, society still sends conflicting messages about how women should wield power and influence, making the topic an important one to pay attention to. As organizations move away from hierarchical, position-driven power to more collaborative, team-based environments, there are significant implications on the way leaders influence."

Ruderman is CCL's Director, Americas and EMEA Research and Senior Fellow. Her research focuses on the career development of women and the leadership challenges inherent in leading a diverse workforce. She co-authored the book Standing at the Crossroads: Next Steps for High-Achieving Women. She is also co-editor of Diversity in Work Teams: Research Paradigms for a Changing Workplace, and the 3rd edition of the Center for Creative Leadership Handbook of Leadership Development. For the past 26 years, Ruderman has been deeply immersed in research on leadership, adding to CCL's extensive database of primary research. She is now undertaking new research to identify linkages between neuroscience and leadership effectiveness.

Ruderman's work has been published, summarized and quoted in scores of outlets, including the Chicago Tribune, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Fast Company, Working Woman, Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Applied Psychology, Eurobusiness, and Leader to Leader. Ruderman speaks frequently to corporate and academic audiences about issues relating to the careers of women managers and leaders. She received her bachelor of arts in psychology from Cornell University and her master's and doctorate in organizational psychology from the University of Michigan.
